Nineteen years after forming, legendary brutal death metallers Suffocation are back with their sixth full length offering, and first on Nuclear Blast Records, titled Blood Oath. This album marks the third release by the band since their reformation in 2004 following a six year hiatus, and second recording featuring former Decrepit Birth bassist Derek Boyer.
Blood Oath is a ten track release which is being released in five separate formats, with four of the formats featuring two “bonus” tracks. The standard CD and vinyl versions, set for release in Europe on July 3rd and in North America on July 14th, will feature an instrumental of the album’s second track “Pray For Forgiveness” and a rough un-mastered mix of the track “Dismal Dream.” The limited edition features an instrumental version of the title track and a rough un-mastered mix of the song “Cataclysmic Purification.” The European “Blood Pack” edition features all four aforementioned bonus tracks with unique packaging. Finally, the iTunes exclusive will feature a rough un-mastered mix of the song “Undeserving” and an instrumental version of the track “Martial Decimation.”
While each format may contain a slightly different tracklisting, all versions contain the same 10 tracks that compose the full length. The material contained on these 10 tracks is a relentless technical brutal assault, overflowing with Frank Mullen’s signature raspy barks, the precise blasting of Mike Smith, the thick chunky finger plucking of bassist Derek Boyer and the insanely technical riffing of Terrence Hobbs and Guy Marchais.
While Blood Oath is unquestionably a Suffocation release, that’s not to say it’s another Souls To Deny or Suffocation. It’s not even another Pierced From Within or Despise The Sun. Blood Oath is a beast all it’s own, in both good and bad ways. Firstly, it’s good to hear Suffocation writing a new album featuring all new riffs and song structures. These guys aren’t simply re-hashing old riffs or melodies from Pierced From Within or Effigy Of The Forgotten like they’ve done on more recent efforts. The bad aspect of that is the song writing, while technical and impressive, doesn’t contain the familiar hook of earlier releases.
The songs on Blood Oath are much more choppy with constant time signature changes and breakdowns. They’ll play a riff for a few seconds and just as you’re getting into it, they’ll stop and start doing something else, which makes the album pretty difficult to follow. Earlier efforts like Effigy Of The Forgotten and Pierced From Within were structured in a manner that the material was easy to get into the first listen, I only had to hear Human Waste, Effigy Of The Forgotten, Pierced From Within and Despise The Sun once to become fully engrossed by the material. I’ve listened to Blood Oath roughly thirty times and other than a couple of tracks, it’s just not clicking with me. I had the same problem with their last full length, Suffocation, and had to listen to it countless times spread out over a year before I got into it and that may be the case with this effort as well.
The production is decent, but it does sound a little muddy at times, especially when all five members are involved at the same moment. The drums and vocals tend to be higher in the mix than the guitars, so sometimes the guitars get a little lost behind the drum beats and barks. One nice thing is the bass is clearly audible, you can hear every pluck of the bass string, so if you’re a big fan of bass playing you’ll be able to stare at your speakers in awe of Derek’s ability. The mix is adequate for the material, but any audiophile will tell you it could have, and likely should have, been much better.
The artwork, handled by brutal death metal artist Jonzig, is pretty phenomenal and easily one of his best pieces to date featuring five hooded figured hovering around an altar in a scene that looks like it’s straight out of a Dan Seagrave nightmare. It just has a real old school look to it which will appeal to pretty much all fans of old school death metal album cover art.
On the whole, Blood Oath is a solid effort, although it’s one that just isn’t as enjoyable to listen to as the band’s material written in the 90s. As one of Suffocation‘s biggest fans, I’m honestly pretty disappointed by this release, I was hoping for something much more memorable, but Blood Oath comes up short with iffy songwriting and an unbalanced production. By no means is it a bad album, but I don’t think this is going to satisfy the cravings of die hard Suffocation fans looking for the next Effigy Of The Forgotten, Pierced From Within or Despise The Sun. I’m going to set this album aside for a few months and give it another spin, maybe it’ll click then, but right now, I just honestly can’t get into it at all. It’s definitely worth a few listens, but it’s really not memorable enough to stick around in your stereo for long.

I must have warmed to this release a lot faster than you did. It took me a few listens to really get into it so I can kinda understand where you’re coming from. Still I think this a great album and I can’t wait for my order to get here.
It’s not a bad album and I’m sure in a few months I’ll get into it, but right now it’s just falling pretty flat with me. It’s definitely not a new Pierced From Within or Effigy Of The Forgotten though, but I wasn’t expecting that to begin with.
It took me a while to get into this album as well, it really doesn’t have any distinctive or catchy moments in it at all, and the guitar solos are really unmemorable, but I still thinks it’s an awesome album. Boyer bass playing and Smith’s drumming are what really made it for me.
That sums it up pretty well. Technically it’s a solid release, but the material itself isn’t very memorable or catchy. It’s good to listen to and admire the musicianship, but not much else.
i’d imagine catchin these tunes live would do them even more justice… some music just isn’t meant to be on a cd
I heard one of the new songs live last year, sounded pretty killer live, then again I was completely shitfaced. Even if I’m not totally enthralled with the new disc I’m still eager to catch them live again, hoping they do another tour that comes through Vancouver soon. Definitely one of the best live bands around.
Is not that I was expecting a new “Effigy…” or a new “Pierced…” but to be honest I’ve read so many reviews about dudes being disappointed by this new record that I am now expecting this to be quite boring or something…
I haven’t heard it yet, I honestly don’t want to, but uhm… I pre-ordered this album like a month ago, and now after reading all this crap I keep thinking I should have bought something more brutal…like chopsticks or something…
Maybe it works on my behalf, maybe as my expectations are low as fuck due to all this harsh reviews I’ll now get the CD and I’ll think “hey…it’s not half bad dudes…fuck this is awesome” …
I agree, it’s not as catch as the classic suffocation.. but I do somewhat disagree with you on the production part.. think it sounds fantastic (for suffocation) bass is nice and clear, and I think pretty well balanced as a whole. Dig the more mid-paced stuff… However, Pierced it is not.
I also could never get into the self-titled, so I know what you mean.. I might have to play that again as I don’t think I heard it since it came out.
This album is not sitting with me well. I don’t like it at all so far, however I’m gonna keep spinning it and hopefully something will click with me
I love it. This is the kind of record that will be considered “underappreciated gem” 10 years from now. The production’s nice and muddy, a pleasant surprise considering their move to a big label. Mullen’s vocals are less coherent than the s/t which is a good thing. It was embarassing to hear him enunciate some of his lyrics on the last record. And the solos are liberally sprinkled, and if not upto Cerrito-level, are certainly as good as anything they’ve done since the split and carry that trademark Suffo-feel. I believe you’ll have to revamp your review or write a fresh one if you keep on at the album.
I actually like the fact that this album is initially a little less catchy or memorable than their recent work. The self titled immediately impressed me, but after I got to know the album better it seemed to have less depth. This one took me a few more listens, but right now I get the sense that it will have more lasting appeal. Of course I can’t say for sure how I will feel in a year.
OK, wrong once again. This CD pretty much sucks.
I’ve been trying, trying, trying and trying… I’ll try again a couple of times, and if it doesn’t click, I’ll get a cheese shredder and scrape out my Suffocation tattoo. I’m that disappointed.
The review is awesome though; it says what it has to say. Not a bad album, a pretty fresh one actually, but extremely disappointing for the fans.
Techy wank bullshit as expected. Suffocation will be having gay sex with the whole Unique Leader roster while wearing Necrofaggits t-shirts in no time.
That’s a weird thing to accuse them of. This cd is less technical than Pierced or Breeding, so if it is a disappointing release, that’s not the reason.
Have to say, totally agree with this review. I’ve listened to it loads and I just can’t pick out any tunes at all. Other than the title track, this is leaving me really cold. And the production isn’t the best. I feel as if i’m wasting my time with this and will go back to Souls to Deny, Pierced… & Effigy… for some proper Suffo magic.
Its much different for me then, Igo in one chat room/blog room and they all absolutly love it and like this one there not to impressed, I think this is their best effort to date…. It’s suffo to the fullest
Totally agree with Teufel. This technical improvement made me indifferent, I prefer the old material Effigy, Despise e Pierced of course. Although, I listen till I’m boring this new Blood Oath.
Stay Brutal!!!
im sorry but giving this album a rating of worthwhile is being WAY too generous. this album is nothing short of lame. i cannot believe this is suffocation. not a single song is worth the time it takes to listen to it. and everyone saying this album is more technical than previous efforts, explain to me where you get that from? to call this “technical wankery” is even sillier than calling it “worthwhile”
production-wise..this kinda reminds me of morbid angel’s heretic..it has a warm, fuzzy feel to it. some of the riffs actually sound like morbid angel, hate eternal and cannibal corpse. hell..they even decided to put some instrumental tracks on it like there was on Heretic. overall, not as accessible or crushing as the self-titled album was. they’ll probably never capture the magic of the first 3 albums.interestingly, in some parts, they remind me of old Internal Bleeding .If Doug Cerrito was still in the band..they’d probably write something devastating.
I’ve got it originally today and what a delusion!!! Booklet of miserable only three page and lyrics character about more more small. Album mediocre, package average, Nuclear Blast thieves!!! EMULE RULE!!!
…..huh???
Major respect for Suffocation, but this is a good album. Not a great album. Good. I’ve listened to it some 50x or so and I like it enough to repeat it. However, everytime I listen to this album there are points where I think the songwriting and riffs are very watered down and boring. IMO Suffocation have not really continued down the path they pioneered with Pierced. Perhaps they have lost the songwriting fire they had at one time as they’ve gotten older (it seems to be a very common phenomena in rock/metal bands). Perhaps it’s the small changes in lineup/chemistry over the years. Blood Oath also has semi-weak production that sounds like someone threw a blanket over the speakers. Images of Purgatory, Come Hell or High Priest, Blood Oath are standouts for me. Until they put out a brutal album like Pierced again I think the avg Suffo fan will be mildly disappointed.
Dismal Dream is annoying as fuck.
WHERE THE FUCK IS THE BLASTING ON THIS ALBUM ?????? At least the self titled had some really fast parts.
I love the comment above me “Blood Oath also has semi-weak production that sounds like someone threw a blanket over the speakers”. I coulnd’t agree more.
I have to agree, Dismal Dream is annoying as SHIT… just like Translucent Patterns of Delirium on the previous full length, it was thrown on there to please the Slipknot and Lamb of God kiddies. Something simple and traditionally structured with extremely “nu” lyrics (SHUT UP, YOU). They weren’t kidding when they said they wanted to start getting more success; too bad Mike Smith never mentioned they’d be writing gay fucking songs on purpose to try and get more attention/success. I actually think the S/T is stronger as a whole, simply because the first half of the CD (minus the aforementioned track) plus Entrails of You (killed live) and the re-recordings of Prelude to Repulsion AND, more importantly, Anomalistic Offerings (!!!)… Marital Decimation is nice, but listening to that re-recording just makes you realize how inferior the rest of the album is in comparison. The S/T I feel did a better job with the “catchier” sound of Suffocation that they were going for, with better hooks and memorable parts… nothing is really memorable on Blood Oath. The title track is neat, though.
It’s not a technicality problem, if you listen to the old albums (Breeding and Pierced in particular)you’ll notice there were even more riffs and technical parts.
But these songs were much more “alive” pushing all the time with great tension-release moments that are lacking on Blood Oath.
The s/t album got too average song structure in my opinion.
I have to admit that this album has still not grown on me. My problem with it, is that a lot of the songs sound interchangeable. You’ll be listening to a song, and you’ll think to yourself how it sounds familiar to another song you’ve heard on the album. There are times where they shine, but they don’t outweigh the ‘ho-hum’ experience I got.
I’m 25 years old, and I’ve been following Suffocation since I was 14 (Mexican scene are more into death metal than any other genre). And I do agree with TEUFEL. This is a solid record, the bass sound cracked my speakers (damn…Made in China), and the vocals, guitars and drums do their job. Maybe (IMHO) the main problem is the mix rather than the production itself. The instrumental song(s) and the rough mix song(s) are a great add, something that I admired they (or their label) tried. Overall, is a great album, the artwork is great, the way the cd goes from a low-slow/mid song to a more mid/fast rest of the album was a good thing to do. They’re not reinventing the genre they created, I think they just did what they felt it was right at that very moment.
I’m finding Blood Oath a minor let-down. I’ve long quit dreaming of another Suffo album of the absolute awesomeness of the my favourite trio: Effigy-Pierced-Breeding. Even the Despise the Sun EP was 17 minutes of death metal immortality. Alas, I was somehow still expecting a strong rebound from Suffocation after the rather ordinary last s-t disc.
The songs on Blood Oath, as so many of you guys have already pointed out, are pretty darn good without being outright great. That’s enough to seriously let me down. Sure, this isn’t a sucky album, no way. But there’s a certain tedious, tired, safety-seeking sameness to it, and lack of surprise and menace that I always revered about Suffo’s peerless death metal. The band seems to settle into a mid-paced, restrained, stripped-down groove, from the start, and pretty much stick with that, throughout the album. I didn’t mind the ‘production’ much. I thought it was precise, powerful and pretty satisfying, overall. I ain’t no audiophile but I can at least say that the sound production on BO is certainly a whole lot better than what I got on previous Suffo albums. I’ll foreve lament how an under-rated masterclass like Breeding the Spawn was awfully served by the production, at the time.
Sure, Mike’s drumming is nothing short of stunning, at several moments. But there’s a dispiriting dearth of blasting, I can’t fathom why. Frank (one my all-time dm-vocal heroes) disappoints me a lot by sort of overdoing the ‘decipherable’ vocal approach, and rather samey sounding style, on all the songs. I wish he sounded more varyingly brutal and far less decipherable. The solos aren’t awful or anything, but just pretty ordinary and similar. There’s a lot of seriously cool guitar playing by Hobbs and Marchais, though I wonder if I’m a snob in constantly yearning for the return of my absolute favourite Suffo guitar hero i.e Doug Cerrito, tag-teaming with the permanently marvellous Terrance Hobbs.
Dismal Dream, for one, still pisses me off. It isn’t exactly a totally shitty song, but it annoys me in that it typifies some of Suffo’s recent attempts at being blatantly much more “accessible” to a certain fan crowd that couldn’t ever stomach their earlier stuff (i.e if they ever even dared to venture there).
Some of the lyrics, the song structures of verse/chorus that so marred the s-t disc are all here on this disc, as well. Blood Oath somewhat reminds me of the last Deeds of Flesh disc, ‘Of What’s to Come’ in that both sound rather too melodic (in the ways these brutal-tech dm legends can get)and far too restrained, formulaic and gunning for wider acceptability than any of us ever expects them to be.
I have dissed the s-t disc, in the past. But now I’m starting to wonder if Blood Oath is actually a small step further back for this almighty band. Heck no, maybe I’ll give it further, patient hearings. After 3-4 full listens, I definite ‘like’ it. Except that, when it comes to my idols, Suffocation, no less, I just expect to get an out and out classic that I can ‘love’. With Blood Oath, I’m not betting that I will.
