Sulaco
Tearing Through the Roots

Genre:Technical Death MetalFormat:CDTracks:13
Label:Willowtip RecordsYear:2006

Led by Kalibas, Brutal Truth, Lethargy, Nuclear Assault and Matrikhore guitarist Erik Burke, Sulaco play some of the most insane death metal you’re likely to hear. Tearing Through The Roots is 13 tracks of crazy picking, fractured rhythms and technical mastery that’ll leave you amazed that anyone could record anything that sounds this chaotic, yet still remain an awesome piece of music.

To give you an idea of what the music sounds like, picture someone with attention deficit disorder and a really bad stutter. Lock him alone in a room with nothing to eat but sugar and speed. The frenetic insane stuttered sounds that come out of his mouth are exactly what Sulaco‘s instruments sound like blaring out of my speakers. The music flows, but there’s a constant jittery stuttered sound throughout, it’s intense, fast and catchy as fuck!

While I sit here being bombarded with this technical overload, I’m filled with images of Death. While Sulaco musically sound nothing like Death, the vocals of Erik Burke remind me very strongly of the powerful wails of the late great Chuck Schuldiner. The way the music is structured and the technical display is also very reminiscent of Death.

The riffing of Erik Burke will make your head spin, Chris Golding’s assault on the drum kit will get you air drumming and the bass lines of Lon Hackett bring it all together. Honestly, this is one of the most impressive technical death metal releases I’ve heard; high paced, frenetic and aggressive. Tearing Through the Roots has it all. If you’re a technical death metal fanatic, this album will leave you tired and sore from thrashing about throughout. It’s impossible to sit still listening to this album. I hope they plan on recording new material soon! M-m-mmm-ust-t-t-t o-o-oooow-nuh-nuh-nnnn!
