Hot on the heels of their highly regarded 2003 debut Le Mort and 2005′s follow-up EP offering Slow Death By Grinding Australian gore machines The Day Everything Became Nothing are back with their 3rd full length offering; Invention: Destruction. For those of you unfamiliar with the group they are an Australian goregrind act consisting of members of Fuck…I’m Dead, Blood Duster, The Kill and Desekrator. The material on their first two efforts was a super thick, chugging, groovetastic slab of choppy goregrind in the vein of Cock And Ball Torture fused with Last Days Of Humanity pitchshifting.
Invention: Destruction picks up where Slow Death By Grinding left off and delivers another bout of blunt force trauma to the back of the skull with a meaty-as-Ron Jeremy’s-woodrow double-helping of simplistic catchy chunky grooves, skull thumping beats and pitchshifted devil dog snarls. The album as a whole has a heavy Cock And Ball Torture groove and feel to it, whereas the shifted vocal sound and patterns are reminiscent of Bart Bouwmans’ roars on Last Days Of Humanity‘s Hymns Of Indigestible Suppuration. The music is similar to what you’d hear if you took the music of Gut, Cock And Ball Torture, Last Days Of Humanity, Dead and Blood Duster, crammed it in a blender and set it to "grind." There isn’t a single solo to be found, no finger-shredding riffs, no jaw-dropping displays of high-speed drum kit destruction, this is just pure choppy goregrind.
Notable tracks include the face-shredding chuggathon "Cut" with guest shrieks from Fuck…I’m Dead‘s Jay Jones, the Swede-grind inspired "Burn" featuring Mors Principium Est front man Ville Viljanen and "Shock" featuring the insane motormouth vocal stylings of James Ludbrooke of Damaged/Terrorust. Normally collaborative projects sound good on paper but pretty shit when it gets put on disc, but each of the tracks fuses the trademarked The Day Everything Became Nothing sound with elements of each vocalist’s main effort; "Cut" has some of the faster grinding one would expect from Fuck…I’m Dead, "Burn" features elements of the Swedish grind sound (think later Nasum) and the vocal segments of "Shock" have a riffing and drumming pattern that sounds like it’s straight from an early Damaged recording.
While goregrind is a niche of music few people comprehend and can get into, The Day Everything Became Nothing is one of the few bands whose sound can appeal to both goregrind aficionados as well as your average catchy death metal fan. This album is highly recommended to fans of the first two efforts, fans of Cock And Ball Torture and groovy goregrind and anyone who likes something slow, catchy, heavy, fun and aggressive.
