Ever listen to an album once or twice and completely dismiss it, only to come back to it several months later, give it a last chance, and all the sudden end up wondering what you ever had against it in the first place? That’s pretty much what I got with the latest Torsofuck CD, Erotic Diarrhea Fantasy. When I first heard the disc I wrote it off as horrible goregrind, but now that I’m sitting here and listening to it in-depth I’m trying to figure out why the flying fuck I had so much rancor for the fucker in the first place. Don’t get me wrong- I still have some gripes with the record- but it’s no where near what I originally surmised about them.
The music itself is pretty solid goregrind. It’s got your standard guttural vocals and machine-gun speed grinding guitars, all executed with the necessary amount of skill. The lyrics are naturally sick, morbid, disturbing, all the while being pretty god damn funny and satirical. You got your typical lighting quick audio assault in songs like the title track and "Four Legged Whore" and the occasional slightly more mid-tempo deathgrind pieces like the ever-humorous "Raped By Elephants". The song writing has some catchy hooks to it, but isn’t anything amazing. For what’s there, it’s pretty much your standard goregrind release.
Which of course comes to my two gripes: it’s too formulaic and the band is sound sample happy (and I mean extremely sound sample happy). With the former, that’s pretty much what perturbed me at first: it was so formulaic that my brain shut off and didn’t even try to dissect the music. Most of the songs obey this basic pattern: "gore/horror sound sample, intro riff, groove, growl, groove, grind, groove, grind, grind. Repeat the last 7 steps." Yeah, the songs are solid, but in the long run there’s not much that can really raise these guys above the other goregrind acts.
Then there is the matter of sound samples. Why is it that nearly every damn band out there has to use sound samples in their music? From Aborted to Ed Gein to The Ravenous, nearly every extreme band uses these things. Now, this isn’t a bad thing if used properly (i.e. Cephalic Carnage, Fuck… I’m Dead, etc.) but most bands abuse the fuck out of them. Torsofuck is no different. Grabbing stuff from various horror films (spanning from Cannibal Ferox to Xtro) and Freddy Got Fingered, this album is inundated with sound samples. If the band actually used some discretion, the sound samples would mesh more appropriately with the music and actually be pretty God damn funny. However, Torsofuck has the samples dragging on and on: many of the sound samples go as long as 1:30 and quite often take up nearly half of each song’s length. This isn’t good; it becomes dead-weight filler. I came for some gut-eviscerating grind, not to hear sound samples from horror trailers that I’ve already viewed countless times.
Overall, this album is definitely a lot better than my first impression of it. The music is solid and your average grind fan will have no problem getting into it, but in the end it’s nothing special that you haven’t already seen. If you already have the new Gigantic Brain CD or something of equal caliber from Razorback Records and absolutely need to hear "Raped by Elephants" then by all means grab this disc. Otherwise, there are better bands to grab first. Written By: Necro-tron
