This is an incredible album. Awesome beats and a fantastic drum sound put together with a tight, clear guitar tone, playing simple, dark, melodic, straightforward old-school black metal, classical influence and all (NO keyboards). I want to say it’s a more melodic and melancholic version of Gorgoroth, yet still violent at times… whereas Gorgoroth tends to be more murderous and aggressive, Trelldom creates a more sad, suicidal atmosphere. Though not a direct intention, this is a nice kick in the head to most retarded "black metal" today. Trelldom is doing something they’re good at and lett it flow naturally. Painful from beginning to finish, cold, sickening and disgusting feelings laced into every passage, Gaahl’s vocals carry these emotions and more. Gaahl has put EFFORT and POWER into his voice, which swings from mood to mood, supplementing if not dictating the many settings the music already conjures. Production is decent as well, drums and Mutt the drummer being a major highlight. "Slave Til En Kommende Natt" and "Hïyt Opp I Dypet" stand out as my favorites on this album, "Slave…" offering clean vocals reminiscent of Atilla on "De Mysteriis…". "Svinfylking" is an interesting track, combining completely maniacal and violent vocals with a somewhat pleasant melody, adding some amusement value to the insanity of it all. The last song, "Sowar Dreyri", is an utterly fucking brilliant, hypnotic hymn to kill yourself to. A simple, repetitive melody, close to a Transylvanian Hunger sort of thing, the music builds and builds…guitar and bass work together to create a total trance-like feeling and Gaahl’s vocals truly shine here, sick, cold, hateful, relentlessly horrid and agitated, filling the listener with sorrow and disgust. If someone is listening to this song over and over, I’d say the end is possibly near. As the melody of this song sinks into you, the voice makes its way from mournful moaning to tormented screams, building up for several minutes until finally at a point the cries start attacking you, and then a second guitar track comes in and totally fills the music, atmosphere, everything…when it hits you just right, it will bring you to tears. This album was recorded about 2 years ago now, and Hammerheart has thankfully released it. Fans of old black metal will hopefully pick up on this… it is recommended to anyone interested in real black metal. Written By: Abbas
