A new Trivium album. Whoopee. See this enthusiasm? You see this enthusiasm I can so easily contain? Yeah, I thought so.

Shogun is really just an extension of The Crusade, with Trivium still producing watered-down thrash-influenced metalcore while riding the coattails of other artists. While the riffs aren’t completely blatant rip-offs like the rest of their discography (’cept for certain areas, like "Insurrection", which has both Metallica riff worship and Pantera aggro vocal emissions), they’re so run-of-the-mill and common that you will swear you’ve heard them somewhere else. Good example: the song "Down from the Sky". While it’s not an exact rip-off of anything, it’s so generic it sounds like 50 different songs.

And hell, at least in the past I could look at their musicianship and say to myself, “Necro, if it wasn’t for their shitty songwriting, they’d be awesome.” On Shogun, they don’t even utilize their complex abilities. It’s not sloppy by any means and there is still a lot of tight playing, but it feels like the band wanted to “play it safe” with their writing. There’s nothing here to test their ability, nothing risky, and there is no real fury to make up for their already shit song writing ability.

To be fair, I actually found vocalist Matt Heafy a FUCKLOAD more tolerable on Shogun. His melodic clean choruses fit the music a lot better on this go-around, and he’s restraining the annoying Hetfield-isms we saw on The Crusade. But Jesus Titty Fucking Christ, I came here for metal thrashing madness, not passable vocals.

Fuck, I can’t even think about anything rude or funny to say. Shogun is simply that bland. It’s like a black hole of vapid suckage, seeping up everything entertaining into its hyper-dense, collapsed center. And everything I’ve ever said about the band really still applies; at this point, I’m just repeating myself. God damn - and kids like this shit? Someone get these faggots a The Crown record. Not just kids, adults too. Yeah - I know people older than me that like Trivium. Sad, eh?

    UpInSmoke Says:
Yeah, that is kind of sad. In fact, it’s somewhat depressing.

yeah i got acsendancy and that album is decent, i can listen through it without wanting to kill myself or others. I did not even bother with the crusade cause well metallica already played those songs and guess what they did better. And then there is shogun i was going to download it and then i thought to myself why dont i just take a hammer and smash my own testicles instead it might be more fun.

I’m a sixteen year old lesbian and that band is gayer than I am. I remember hearing a bunch of trivium-obsessed fools a short while back. They actually had the audacity to open thier worthless idiot mouths and say that Carcass was a trivium rip-off. For a moment I wondered if I should correct these misguided fools, but I decided that.. Maybe they don’t deserve anything better than some generic shit band. That being said, I’m gonna go listen to Corporal Jigsore Quandry and stick my head in a microwave.

These guys are to thrash what Silver Chair was to grunge, crap.

@ A-V: “I remember hearing a bunch of trivium-obsessed fools a short while back. They actually had the audacity to open thier worthless idiot mouths and say that Carcass was a trivium rip-off.” You are joking, right? I do not believe anyone can be that stupid. And as for Trivium, I hope Bill Steer and Jeff Walker join forces and sue them and Roadrunner for every penny they’ve got. All to the tune of Corporal Jigsore Quandary, of course.

    A-V Says:
@ Dysenteric: No.. I’m regret to say that they really are that stupid. They even stuck to the argument after being told that Carcass came out with “Necroticism - Descanting The Insalubrious” when Trivium members were still prancing around and pissing thier pants in kindergarten. The very argument started over Corporal Jigsore Quandary when they just couldn’t resist making the idiot statement of the century.

Jesus fucking christ….A-V, that’s just depressing. And Paula Abdula, that’s a very good comparison, I couldn’t agree more.

IF YOU FUCKING HATE THE BAND JUST KEEP IT TO YOUR FUCKING SELVES YOU DIP SHITS, LETS SEE YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS, I DOUBT YOU CAN DO IT AS HALF AS GOOD AS THEY CAN!!!

    Necro-tron Says:
Hey, Amp. I think your caps lock key is broken. You might want to get that fixed, buddy.

    Dysenteric Says:
Better yet, get it removed. Keyboards have this thing called a shift key. Two of them in fact. You hold that to type upper-case letters, I do it so often it’s become second nature. I used the left shift key to type the capital letters this comment contains, and I didn’t think about it while I was doing it. My left ring finger even does that motion to hold the shift key down momentarily while I’m sleeping. Why oh why haven’t caps lock keys become obsolete? Why haven’t Trivium become obsolete, even?
