Nothing like a free compilation to brighten your day. Actually, the back of the disc says, "If you sell this CD or pay to get it…you’re a fucking asshole!!" I am not an asshole, thank goodness. This is a great compilation of western European bands (plus one from NY). This disc contains many of those bands that you have heard the name of but not any of their music, so it’s a compilation that’s worthy of finding. Don’t buy it or else you are an asshole! That’s not me saying that, so don’t get pissed! Here is a rundown of the bands:
1) Disgorge - This sounds like most of Disgorge’s other material. If you like them, you will like this. I have never really understood the craze over this band. They are good but far from spectacular.
2) Paganizer - Sounds like early Entombed before they toured with Zakk Wylde. It has that Sunlight Studios sound.
3) Kronos - At first, this song sounded like one of those corny, "gallant" sounding black/death songs, but it soon transformed into brutal death that would fit nicely on the Unique Leader label. This band has that Pyaemia/Disavowed technical grind sound.
4) The Heretic - Black/atmospheric/gothic metal with bad vocals and an occasional thrash riff. I truly dislike this type of music.
5) Abbadon Incarnate - Irish death metal? Sloppy straightforward death metal that sounds like it could have been recorded in the early 1990s. A rawer, less technical form of bands like Funerus and other Incantation inspired bands.
6) Verminous - Verminous play a sort of gore-grind that one would find on the Razorback label. It’s decent and the solos give it that old-school feel that’s quite enjoyable.
7) Hour of Penance - Heavy, fast, mozzarella covered, ricotta filled grind from Italy. Again, it has that Pyaemia/Disavowed flavor but the vocals are much lower with much more tempo changes. Fairly impressive!
Godus - Slow, droning doom/death metal (not unlike Godflesh) that fires directly into intense grind. This band uses a variation of the same riff the whole song. The beginning riff is decent but does flow well with the rest of the song, which is mostly grind.
9) Wasteform - Grinding, brutal death from upstate NY not unlike Skinless and Malamor. It’s not terribly innovative but it’s brutal and it’s New Yawk, motherfuckers!
10) Misanthropic - Thrashy black death. I have grown very weary of these bands.
11) Zubrowska - A technical grind attack that sounds like early day Cephalic Carnage and Virulence with a myriad of vocal styles. Lots of tight riffing and accurate drums with the occasional varied passage.
12) User Ne - I have no idea what the hell this is. There’s a woman signing in Spanish, a guy growling like one of those huge creatures from Fraggle Rock, and two guys singing in very high, whinny, and annoying voices. Oh yeah, there’s a keyboard and horrible guitar playing. I guess it’s the Spanish version of Opeth.
13) Human Mincer - Another Pyaemia/Disavowed sounding band with deeper, gurgled vocals. Unlike the others mentioned, this band grooves quite often, in similar style to Beheaded. Pretty decent stuff.
14) Vorkreist - Badly recorded death metal. Sounds like many of those Finnish death metal bands like Adremalech and Demilich.
15) Rossomahaar - The Russian version of Mortification with keyboards.
16) Anvil of Doom - More black/death with Iron Maiden inspired riffs. ENOUGH!
17) Defacing - Blasting death grind with a bad recording. However, the recording adds to the blistering nature of the music. A sound much like those wild bands from Indonesia and the Philippines, with a bit of Internal Suffering, and a pinch of groove.
18) Visceral Damage - Poorly recorded death metal with that Finnish sound.
19) Unreal Overflows - A band name that sounds like fifty-cent beer night at the local bar. Impressive technical death metal with great atmosphere that would give many Willowtip bands of the same ilk quite a run for their money. The vocals aren’t the best but the music is great. This is definitely the standout track of the disc. I’m still waiting for their full-length. Written By: Double Ds
