North Carolina stoners Weedeater are here with their third full length offering, and first in 5 years, entitled God Luck And Good Speed. Weedeater offer up 9 tracks of bong-fueled down tuned slow-paced sludgy doom with a deep booming bass sound that’ll make the fillings in your teeth rattle, slow, crushing bluesy riffs, solid drumming and the vocals of a man who’s throat is destroyed by years of inhaling the magical herb.
While I’m usually not a fan of southern fried doom, Weedeater are able to keep my attention throughout their 39 minute effort by mixing the perfect amount of slower-than-molasses doom with mid-paced rage fueled sludge. It literally sounds like these three stoners got together and listened to Black Sabbath and Kyuss together at the same time at maximum volume then tried to fuse the two sounds together in the studio. The end result is surprisingly good!
Dave “Dixie” Collins of Bongzilla leads the assault on the senses with his raspy howls and subsonic bass lines, while guitarist Dave Shepherd lays down some dirty and grungy riffs while pie-eyed drummer Keith Kirkum keeps pace, sometimes gently tapping his cymbals and other times sounding like he’s about to punch a hole through his bass drum.
There is a really bizarre interlude midway through the album, a southern-style banjo, bass and vocal track entitled "Alone". It breaks up the album and is a curious addition to the disc, but… they’re stoners, it wouldn’t be a stoner sludge doom disc if there wasn’t something stupid being tossed in for no good reason.
While Weedeater aren’t going to win any awards from their rather generic studio effort, they do a great job of keeping the album entertaining throughout. God Luck And Good Speed is not even remotely original, but it is a solid slab of southern stoner sludge and well worth picking up if you like to rock out to something with a thick meaty bass. I like it! Check it out, doom fiends!

August 25th, 2008 7:25 pmHaven’t really listened to them, honestly. I think I have one of their CDs laying around somewhere, just haven’t listened to it yet.

August 25th, 2008 7:57 pmDopesick’s a fucking awesome album, but Take As Needed For Pain is what most people consider to be their “classic”. If you dug Weedeater, it’s from the same vein.
