I had heard and read a ton of hype about this band so I figured I’d give them a shot and picked their disc up. Welkin is from the ultra-badass country of Belgium, a country known for bitchin’ waffles, fantastic beer, Leng Tch’e and great action flicks courtesy of coke-fiend Jean Claude Van Damme (well, at least up until the Street Fighter movie). Wait, Nowhere To Run sucked ass too. Anyways, Welkin play mid-paced brutal death metal and Angel Inside ain’t too shabby, especially for a debut album. The production is nice and stout, not too muddy and pretty clear. The drums hit you in all the right spots and pack a firm punch. They keep things interesting by switching up the tempo here and there with some slower, plodding passages as well as speeding things up a bit. Angel Inside opens up with a sparse, creeping feel and a decent buildup to open the curtain for the rest of the band. The variety of pacing on every song is good and varied but overall the songs didn’t grab my ears like I hoped. Deep growls as well as high and mid-pitch screams are employed throughout and complement each other very well but again, it didn’t latch on to my throat, slap me in the face and call me a wuss like I wanted it to. Summing it all up, Welkin has created an album that is just… meh. Well, it’s better than meh, it’s not horrible but not outstanding either. I am completely in the middle with this album as I can’t praise or incinerate it, thus a half-assed review. You have to make a judgment for yourself by checking them out. They do have a great deal of potential and I’m intrigued by what they will create in the future. I’ll probably listen to it from time to time but it won’t be on the top of the heap when I’m craving death metal. Written By: GruntCunter
