Ever since I first heard "Pulses In Rhombus Form" from their 1999 demo CD, Floating Cadaver In The Monochrome, I’ve been dying to hear a full-length effort from Spain’s Wormed. In 2003, that full-length effort was finally released, on the most unlikely of labels, Japan’s Macabre Mementos. A lot of you reading this who’ve never heard the band, or even heard of them, are probably wondering why I’d find it unlikely that the first Wormed full length, Planisphaerium, would be released on a small little-known label. Well, when I first heard Floating Cadaver In The Monochrome, I was desperate to get my money together to re-issue the demo, plus the follow-up promo CD, Voxel Mitosis, on a record label of my own. I just didn’t think it was possible for a band of their magnitude to be overlooked by so many other bigger labels. If you aren’t familiar with the earlier work of Wormed, here’s a brief overview; imagine the heaviest, meanest, violent and brutal death metal possible, and add vocals that put Matti Way (ex-Disgorge/Cinerary) and Ruben Rosas (ex-Devourment) to shame. Their demo material was some fucking heavy shit. How does their debut full length compare? Amazingly, it completely blows everything else they’ve done away. Somehow with the loss of one guitarist, the music got even heavier, and infinitely more complex. Even the re-recorded tracks, "Geodesic Dome", "Voxtel Mitosis" and "Pulses In Rhombus Form" sound heavier and more technical. The album has the chaos of Cryptopsy, mixed with the randomness of Cephalic Carnage, mixed with the catchiness of Devourment, mixed with the lyrical geekness of Negligent Collateral Collapse, with those vocals… those fucking unmatchable vocals. One minute you’re nodding your head, getting really into a thick solid pit riff and the next you’re sitting back in pure awe of a blazing section, shaking your head trying to comprehend the technical proficiency involved. Minute to minute, second to second, the band changes things up on the fly and does it better than almost anyone else. Lyrically, the band are total geeks, forget cannibalism and murder, vocalist Phlegeton went straight for his astrophysics textbooks and went through the most obscure passages he could find. I like to consider myself a relatively smart person, but all of this was so far over my head I almost wept. Well, no, crying is for pussies, which is exactly what you are if you listen to this album and say "Mithter Toofull. I’m afraid I jutht don’t agree withth your aththethment of thith album." Go drink a Zima and pass out in a ditch, you fucking assgrabber. This is an album for fans of brutal technical death metal that aren’t afraid to listen to a Spanish band make their favorite bands (ie.) Devourment, Disgorge (CA), Cryptopsy, Deeds Of Flesh and all of the rest sound like choirgirls. Written By: Teufel
